| Background
The story revolves around various souls in Purgatory/Sheol. The hierarchy is compromised by various cryptids who act as guardian angels, protecting those who inhabit planet Earth or alternatively a stretch of land. These duties are watched by an unseen emperor who is located in a plane invisible to those who inhabit Sheol. There are two beings that exist in Sheol who act as enforcers; they are known as Esme and Othello and are most respected among the cryptids and other beasts.
On the opposite end of the spectrum are the oppressors and rebels who insist moving on from Sheol is impossible. They aim to take out their fury on Earth dwellers as well as others stuck in limbo. These nonconformists are locked away in the lowest region of Sheol. Atoning for their defiance will sometimes allow them freedom, but in most cases repenting will do nothing. These prisoners are guarded by countless trustworthy sentinels.
Aside from good and evil, Sheol is inhabited by neutral spirits. These commoners either exist wholly in their world or visit the Earth from time to time. None of their acts impact the humans as severely as their counterparts, however, they play an important role on Earth and in their world.
Earth is in the early stages of disarray (anarchy, natural disasters, disease) and reports of fabled beasts appearing all over the planet adds to the chaos. Though, for each person willing to speak about these sightings is another who omits their presence all together.
Landscape
The living world and Sheol is divided by the river Styx. Unlike legend dictates, Sheol appears cut off from the other realms of existence, appearing to be located on an island in the middle of a vast ocean. However, when a spirit chooses to cross the waters, they can pass into the living world with ease. There is a ferry that carries any willing spirit across the water once every day, departing at dawn and arriving at dusk.
There is one enormous mountain that makes up the city of Sheol. Inside it, spirits exist in a traditional world, thus there is no such thing as technology. They are able to bend the laws of physics and do things no regular human is able to do. Residences are organized according to spirit-types with the monarchy living at the top and the felonious spirits living toward the bottom.
Lastly, there is a sky within the mountain providing both day and night. Anything outside of the mountain is shrouded in white. | |
